Mid-Mod: Four DIY ideas for your home

by Maria Mercedes Gomez & Larissa Porta 02/13/2022

Affectionately known as Mid-Mod, this mid-century interior design movement is heavily influenced by the angular, funky style of the middle of the 20th century. It takes the best of what the late 1950s and early 1960s had to offer and gives it a contemporary twist.

Here are four DIY Mid-Mod home decor projects to try:

DIY hairpin leg nightstand

Hairpin legs first appeared in the 1940s. Throughout the next several decades, many pieces of furniture were made with these wiry hairpin legs. Now, the Mid-Mod movement is bringing these legs back, and you can purchase your own hairpin legs online to create a functional nightstand that blends with your modern home decor. The hairpin legs can be attached to any piece of small wood, and you can finish or paint the wood to create the nightstand of your dreams.

Honeycomb shelves made from popsicle sticks

Most crafters mistakenly believe that popsicle sticks are materials for preschoolers to use, but these useful pieces of wood can be used in many intricate projects. In fact, popsicle sticks can be layered to create the hexagon or pentagon shapes of honeycomb shelves.

When you make your own honeycomb shelves for your Mid-Mod room, you will be able to save a bit of money and spend more of your resources on the accent items that will rest on those decorative shelves.

DIY starburst mirror or clock

The starburst aesthetic is a staple in the Mid-Mod style, but many people do not realize that they can create their own starburst accent pieces. Whether you are hoping to design an accent mirror for your bathroom or incorporate a clock into your living room decor, you can create your own DIY starburst piece by adhering small metal rods to the back of the piece.

Colorful Mid-Mod candles

The Mid-Mod style consists mostly of neutral tones and metal accents, but to complete the room design, add pops of color. You can complete this simple project by cutting out designs in sturdy cardstock and wrapping paper around a favorite glass candle jar. In an instant, you will have bright colors like red and orange strategically placed on those Mid-Mod tables that you have.

As always, practice good fire safety when completing this project. LED candles can work just as well when placed in a larger jar.

Mid-Mod is a flexible interior design style, which can be incorporated into any room. Whether you want to go for an all-out Mid-Mod theme throughout your house or you just want to add hints of this innovative trend into your room design, you will find that these DIY projects are the perfect option.
